Smart vending machines — RFID unattended retail cabinets

Smart vending machines and unattended retail for offices, hotels and gyms. Full service in Finland; Selfly Store smart cabinets and the platform behind them supplied to operators worldwide.

Three smart cabinets in an office: fresh, chilled and frozen, each in its own cabinet

A smart vending machine sells fresh food, snacks and drinks without a cashier, without a kitchen and without fixed opening hours. Moi Store runs the full service in Finland — cabinet, products, restocking and maintenance — and supplies Selfly Store smart cabinets to customers and operators in other markets.

What is unattended retail?

Unattended retail is a point of sale with no staff behind it. The customer picks the product, pays at the cabinet and leaves. For the operator it is a retail location that costs no labour hours: a few square metres of floor, a power socket and a network connection.

The category is wider than the vending machines most people picture. What changed is the technology inside: once a cabinet can recognise what has been taken out of it, the product no longer has to survive a fall down a chute. That single difference is what opens unattended retail up to fresh food.

Three ways to sell food without staff

Traditional vending machine

A spiral or belt dispenses the product. Reliable for packaged snacks and bottles, unsuitable for salads, sandwiches and ready meals.

Micro market

An open, unstaffed shop area with shelves, coolers and a self-checkout kiosk. Larger range, but it needs a room of its own and it is exposed to shrinkage.

Smart cabinet

A closed, secured cabinet the size of a fridge that identifies products by RFID. Fresh food range, no dedicated room, and the door only opens after payment authorisation.

How does an RFID smart cabinet work?

  • Every product carries an RFID tag, so the cabinet knows its own stock item by item rather than slot by slot.
  • The customer authorises payment at the terminal, the door unlocks, they take what they want and close the door.
  • The cabinet compares the contents before and after, and charges only for what was actually taken.
  • Stock levels, sales and best-before dates are visible remotely, so restocking is scheduled against real consumption instead of a fixed route.

Why operators move to smart cabinets

Range

Fresh meals, salads and sandwiches become sellable, which raises the average basket above what a snack machine can reach.

Waste

When expiry dates are in the system, products approaching their date can be priced down before they have to be thrown away.

Route planning

Remote stock data replaces guesswork, so a van is sent when a cabinet needs filling rather than on a calendar.

Shrinkage

The cabinet is locked and payment is authorised before the door opens.

Footprint

A cabinet fits where a micro market does not — a corridor, a lobby, a break room.

Sites

A location that is too small for a staffed cafeteria can still carry a cabinet, which widens the map of places worth serving.

What can you sell in a smart cabinet?

The range is built around the location, and cabinets at different temperatures can stand side by side at the same point: chilled for fresh food, frozen for ice cream, ambient for snacks.

  • Fresh meals, salads and sandwiches
  • Snacks, protein bars and recovery drinks
  • Soft drinks, water and energy drinks
  • Frozen food and ice cream
  • Ambient snacks

Where smart cabinets work

An office, a hotel, a gym and a hospital each need a different range, a different number of cabinets and a different restocking rhythm. Moi Store has a service concept for each of those environments.

Working with Moi Store

In Finland Moi Store delivers the whole service, and the site itself does not pay for the cabinet: pricing for the service concepts starts at €0 per month. Moi Store brings the cabinet, fills it and maintains it, and the revenue comes from the products sold.

Outside Finland, Moi Store supplies the cabinets and the technology as the exclusive Selfly Store reseller. If you are building or extending an unattended retail operation of your own, tell us the sites you have in mind and we will come back with a cabinet configuration and a quote.

If you buy cabinets and operate them yourself, one thing is worth knowing before you compare quotes: a smart cabinet is not only hardware. Behind it sits the platform that makes it smart — stock levels, pricing, expiry dates, sales reporting and the API into your own systems — and that platform carries a monthly fee. A quote that shows only a hardware price is not showing the whole cost of running the point of sale. Which model fits, and what it costs, depends on the sites, the number of cabinets and the expected sales, so it is calculated case by case.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a vending machine and a smart cabinet?
A smart cabinet is the intelligent form of a vending machine. Nothing is dispensed: the cabinet uses RFID to identify what is taken out and charges automatically for those products. Because the product is never dropped, fresh meals can be sold as well.
How is a smart cabinet different from a micro market?
A micro market is an open shop area with shelves and a self-checkout kiosk, and it needs a room of its own. A smart cabinet is closed and locked, fits into a corridor or a break room, and only opens once payment has been authorised.
Does a smart vending machine need a kitchen or a separate room?
No. The cabinet is the size of a fridge and needs only a power socket and a network connection. No dedicated room, kitchen or water point is required.
Who refills the cabinet and takes care of maintenance?
In Finland, Moi Store does. The service covers product delivery, refilling and restocking, cleaning and servicing, plus remote monitoring of stock levels. Elsewhere, the operator runs the cabinet and Moi Store supplies it.
How does the customer pay?
At the payment terminal on the cabinet. Payment cards and mobile payment both work, and the charge is formed automatically from the products taken out of the cabinet.
Can I buy Selfly Store cabinets for my own vending business?
Yes. Moi Store supplies cabinets to operators and retailers, together with the platform behind them, which carries a monthly fee. We also run this model ourselves in Finland, so the advice you get on range, restocking rhythm and waste comes from operating the cabinets rather than only selling them. Send us the number of sites and the type of location and we will put together a configuration and a quote.
